Bear is a 1-year-old male German Shepherd who was surrendered to the shelter by his owners. It was clear that this energetic & athletic young dog had never been trained so he spent six weeks training with our friends at Lower Lassen K-9 Dog Training in Shingletown CA.
Bear is a very sweet young dog who loves attention. He wants to be with his people & will follow them around the house. He can get underfoot and is a little mouthy when he wants attention. He is learning a great deal now that he has had proper instruction, but Bear needs a strong leader. He is a typical willful 1-year-old GSD who will test boundaries!
Bear will walk on heel and greets other dogs nicely on leash. He is shy around strangers & will bark until he’s comfortable with them, but treats go a long way for making friends. Bear is young and will fill out but he is not a large dog. He currently weighs about 60 pounds.
Bear loves playing with toys and loves a good game of fetch. He has good house manners though he has been known to counter surf if mac & cheese is within reach! He is mostly housetrained and his foster family is working on this.
Bear spends the night in his crate and has spent up to 3 hours in it during the day. He may need some convincing to go into the crate, but once he’s in he’s fine. He rides quietly lose in the car.
Prospective adopters should have a yard that is big enough for him to run and play and the adopter should have sufficient time to provide adequate exercise. He will do best with an active person who can really stimulate his mind and body. Bear is not a couch potato!
The shelter told us that Bear lived with children and he’s greeted nicely those he’s met. Bear would do best as an only dog, he does well meeting other dogs but his inexperience and boundless energy is too much for most dogs.
Bear loves to play & swim in water. He is a level 3 dog being fostered in San Francisco.
