Tobias is a 10-month old black male German Shepherd dog that was surrendered to the Monterey SPCA due to no fault of his own. He is the type of dog that we commonly see in Rescue – one that has not been taught how to behave. He will need a committed adopter willing to provide him guidance and structure.

Toby is a big beautiful boy, who is very social with humans. He enjoys running and playing with others dogs, but can be a bit pushy, especially when meeting for the first time. Right now, he just lacks proper doggie manners, but is learning quickly. He loves to play with toys; any toy will do, a ball, kong, plush, it doesn’t matter.

Toby rides really well in the car (uncrated), just enjoying the view. He road home from the shelter with his head on his foster mom’s shoulder most of the way. He walks pretty well on leash, but will pull from time-to-time, so needs more work in this area.

Toby has also done well being crated in his foster home, where he sleeps all night without issue, although his preference is to be out and about.

His interactions with children is unknown at this time. However, due to his size and the fact that he can be a little mouthy (he is learning this is unacceptable behavior), only older children will be considered in an adoptive home. His reaction to cats and other small critters is unknown at this time.

It will be necessary for an adopter to have experience in raising a GSD or other large breed dog, as well as begin an obedience course, based upon positive re-enforcement, to help Toby become a well-behaved canine citizen.

Toby is a Level 3 dog who is spending some time at our training facility to learn some basic obedience skills.
