Kohana (meaning “swift” in the Native American Sioux language) is a 3-year old Belgian Malinois dog that was picked up as a stray by Monterey County Animal Services.

Kohana is a really nice Mali boy who has not been taught much in his life and needs to learn manners; however, he is a quick study and is already mastering being crated and house training on his first day in foster care. He walks well on leash, and only needs minor corrections.

Kohana is quite thin right now and needs to gain some much needed weight, so his main interest at this point is food, although he does seek attention and will try to be a “lap dog” if allowed.

He does well with other dogs, but can be a bit exhuberant, so proper introductions and monitoring are an absolute must.

Kohana is very agile and would do well at a doggie sport (i.e. agility, dock diving, etc), and will need a strong, confident handler that will gain his respect, while at the same time setting strict guidelines and providing much needed exercise and mental stimulation.

His interactions with cats or other small critters in unknown at this time. Due to his energy level, only older children in an adoptive home will be considered.

Kohana is new to our program, so we will post more information as we come to know him better.

It will be necessary for an adopter to have experience in raising a GSD/Malinois or other large working breed dog, as well as begin an obedience course based upon positive re-enforcement to help Kohana become a well-behaved canine citizen.

Kohana is a Level 3 dog who is spending some time with our trainer.
